Features
RecipeWorks is a full-function recipe management program. It was
designed to be used directly in your kitchen and is useful and easy
to use on any PC computer and most handhelds (Palm
and PocketPC). The PDA editions of RecipeWorks
allow you to create, modify and delete recipes and other data with full
synchronization capabilities with the PC.
RecipeWorks uses a system of tabbed windows and
toolbars to manage your recipes and access the major features. These are
explained below with examples from RecipeWorks (reduced in size).
|
Inventory
|
The Inventory view is used to manage and track your food
storage - long term and short term. RecipeWorks provides some special
synchronization features with the shopping list.
The Inventory feature will help make sure you never run out of a
necessary item - food or otherwise (such as toothpaste). You specify
the goal for an item, or the number of containers of that item you
want to store. Then, when you take an item off the shelf, you remove
it from the inventory and it will be automatically added to the
shopping list to be replenished.

RecipeWorks on the Web
|
The RecipeWorks on the Web feature is an exclusive, integrated
tool to help you find recipes online and keep updated on news
concerning RecipeWorks. This feature safely accesses
information from the RecipeWorks website and provides a dedicated
search engine.
Point. Click. Cook. When you find a recipe you like, you can
save it to your computer with one simple click of the mouse. You can
also download an entire recipe book and automatically open it in
RecipeWorks for later use.
|
 |
|
USDA Nutrient Database Integration
| RecipeWorks integrates version 17 of the USDA
Nutrient Database to allow you to easily browse the information and
to link your recipes. Once a recipe is linked to the database, a
Nutrition Facts table will be displayed - much like that shown on
actual food packaging.
|
 |
|
Table of Contents
| The Table of Contents window is used to display the
hierarchy of your recipes and to help you keep them organized.
Organize your recipes into virtual recipe books and subdivide them
into chapters. This easy-to-use interface provides quick and concise
access to all of your recipes. Optionally, the menu planning data
can be viewed and modified in the Contents window. The Contents
window supports Copy and Paste of recipes and chapter and sorting of
recipes contained in a book.
|
 |
|
Menu Planning
| Use the Menu window to plan, manage, and view a menu.
Using the recipes in the database, you can create a calendar-based
menu. Simply select a date in the calendar and add recipes to each
meal of the day. You can also define how often to repeat the menu.
If a day is displayed in bold, a menu has already been planned for
that day and the menu will appear in the window when it is selected.
You are not limited to just recipes. You can add simple meal
items and also adjust the portion of a recipe or item in the context
of the menu.
|
 |
|
Shopping List
| RecipeWorks provides easy commands to quickly add
the ingredients of any recipe to your shopping list or add custom
items. You can also add the ingredients for all recipes in a menu to
the shopping list with one simple command.
When printing the menu, you can also display a separate shopping
list of everything required for the menu! It will combine all of the
ingredients required to create the meals and list them
alphabetically with the amount required for each item. Simply print
the list up and hit the grocery store.
The shopping list data is integrated with the Inventory. When an
item is used from the Inventory, it is automatically added to the
shopping list. When you are shopping and check the item off your
list, then it is added back to the Inventory.
|
 |
|
Index
| The Index window is used to quickly reference recipes
in alphabetical order. Quickly find recipes by title or ingredient
with the full-function automated index. All recipes are
automatically indexed for quick and easy retrieval.
Either search for a recipe in the list or begin typing the title
and it will be selected.
|
 |
|
Search
| Search for recipes in the database using a variety of
options with the custom search engine. The search tool will match
recipes containing any (or all) of the search words. To search for a
particular phrase, enclose it in quotes. For example, type “tomato
sauce” pasta to find recipes containing the phrase “tomato
sauce” or the word pasta. RecipeWorks will search for
recipes that either match any of the words or all of
them. |
 |
| Additionally, RecipeWorks offers the "What
Can I Make?" feature. This will allow you to find recipes that
can be made with the food you have on hand. Simply place a check
mark in the box next to the available ingredients and click the Go
button. Alternatively, you can also manually type in all of the
ingredients to search for. No more guessing what to have for dinner!
To make a match, all of the ingredients in the recipe must be
specified in the search list.
This feature is also integrated with the Inventory. It will use
items from the Inventory in the search.

 |
|
Portioning and Navigation
| Do you have extra people for dinner tonight? Only
cooking for two? Adjusting the recipe portions has never been
easier! With RecipeWorks you can automatically double a recipe or
even multiply it by 2/3! RecipeWorks will automatically calculate
the correct amounts for you. Simply enter the ratio in the edit box
on the Contents tab and display a recipe.
RecipeWorks remembers recent recipes you have viewed
and now you can navigate through them with the blue arrow buttons.
|
 |
|
Unit Conversions
| Converting units has never been easier. RecipeWorks
provides a simple interface to convert units of weight and measure.
Simply select the type of measurement (volume, weight, temperature,
etc.), enter a value, and select the two units. Quickly determine
how many ounces are in 3½ pounds or how many milliliters are in 2¼
cups.
You can set RecipeWorks to automatically convert all
units. For example, if you are more familiar with metric units, the
program will automatically convert all English units to metric.
|
 |
|
Timer
| RecipeWorks also comes with a built-in timer
application. Simply set the time and click the Start button. You can
also customize the alarm features such as the sound to play. Since
it is a separate application, you can run as many timers as you like
and still use RecipeWorks while they run. |
 |
|
Import/Export
| RecipeWorks has a new Export Wizard to export all
types of data to a Palm, PocketPC, word processor, web page,
spreadsheet, or simple text files.
The new Import Wizard is used to import recipes, shopping lists,
and Inventory data from text files and spreadsheets. It is also used
to import all types of data from a Palm or PocketPC and will
properly synchronize the data with the PC.

And more...
| Easy Data Entry: RecipeWorks has been enhanced to allow
easy data entry of ingredients. Using new technology, ingredients
can be entered and changed using quick keyboard shortcuts. Create
recipes from websites in 3 easy copy-and-paste steps!
Quick Help: Additionally, RecipeWorks
provides you with What's This? help. When you click the '?'
button in the dialog title and then click on any item in the dialog,
a help message appears explaining how to use that item.
Favorites: Easily maintain a list of your favorite recipes
for easy retrieval.
Printing: Why clutter your kitchen with bulky books, card
boxes, or loose papers? Send recipes and other information to the
printer. If you do not use RecipeWorks directly in your kitchen, or
on a handheld computer, simply print the single recipe you need, and recycle it when you are
finished.
Edit-in-Place:
RecipeWorks provides features to help you quickly and easily build
and maintain your recipe database. One such feature is the ability
to edit recipe components directly in the display window with a
simple double-click of the mouse.
Help System: RecipeWorks has a detailed embedded help
system to help you learn the software and work more efficiently in
your kitchen. It provides additional information such as:
- A list of common abbreviations
- A list of units per pound for common items (how many cups of
sugar make a pound?)
- A list of seasonings and their uses
- A list of common substitutions
- Nutritional information for common items
